U.S. regulatory status
FDA-approved (Vyleesi) for low sexual desire in premenopausal women. Other uses are off-label. Prescription required.
What it is
A synthetic peptide related to alpha-MSH, a natural melanocortin hormone.
How it is thought to work
It activates melanocortin-4 receptors in the brain, which are involved in sexual motivation.
Animations simplify biology for teaching. They are not a claim that this peptide works this way in people.
What the research shows
Phase 3 trials in premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder showed modest improvements in desire and related distress.
Safety and considerations
Nausea is common, especially at first. It can briefly raise blood pressure, so it is not for people with uncontrolled hypertension or heart disease. Skin darkening can occur with repeated use.
Our position
An approved, honest option when it is used for the right reason in the right person.
